LISTENING TO THE INDIVIDUAL INSTRUMENT

A trained ear. A personal tuning.

Every client’s piano is fine-tuned by ear, with attention to the character of the instrument and the stability of the result.

Personal care, from Steven.

Every piano responds differently

Pianos differ in scale design, string condition, soundboard response, and the way their tuning pins behave. I listen to the instrument in front of me, rather than treating every piano as if it should respond identically.

Listening beyond individual notes

Fine tuning involves listening to intervals, unisons, and the way the instrument blends across its range. The aim is a coherent musical result that suits the piano, from the bass through the upper treble.

Stabilization is part of the work

Reaching a pitch is only part of tuning. Setting the tuning pins and helping the string tension settle are essential to producing a stable result. I check and refine the work as the instrument responds.

Experience guides the decisions

My approach is informed by over 45 years of hands-on piano service. Electronic tools can provide useful measurements or reference information; they do not replace the listening and judgment I bring to each client’s fine tuning.

What to tell me before a visit

Let me know the make and type of piano, when it was last tuned, and whether you hear unevenness, beating notes, or a change in tone. You do not need to describe the issue in technical terms.

LET’S TALK ABOUT YOUR PIANO
