TOUCH & RESPONSE

Help your piano respond to you.

Regulation addresses how the piano’s mechanism works. It is different from tuning, and it can make an important difference to the playing experience.

Tuning, regulation, and voicing

Tuning adjusts pitch relationships. Regulation adjusts the mechanical action and related components. Voicing addresses aspects of hammer tone. A piano may need one service, or a combination, depending on its condition and your goals.

When the touch feels uneven

Wear and changes in felt and wood can affect the action over time. Uneven keys, difficulty controlling soft playing, slow repetition, or inconsistent response are useful things to mention when requesting service.

What regulation may involve

The work can include checking key travel and alignment, hammer travel, let-off, repetition, and pedal or damper operation. The appropriate adjustments depend on the design and condition of the instrument.

A practical assessment first

Some concerns can be addressed with targeted adjustments; others need repair or more extensive work. I will explain what I find, which improvements matter most, and the proposed scope before proceeding.

Describe what you feel

Tell me which notes or passages feel difficult and whether the problem is new. Your experience at the keyboard is an important part of deciding what the piano needs.
